Mike - Bass Guitar, Backing Vocals
Mike has been playing bass for over 20 years, but started off by accident when a friend lent him a badly made lead guitar with two missing strings. This made playing chords sound very odd so rather than replace the missing strings, Mike began to carve out bass rhythms instead. A week later Mike had bought his first proper bass (a Marlin) and hasn't touched a lead guitar since.
A diploma from the guitar institute at the London Music School finished off the technical side of things and he now concentrates on providing the power to drive the band, while creating innovative sounds and touches to traditional bass parts. His collection of 3 basses includes an unusual, if somewhat battered Fender Power Jazz/Precision hybrid, but his main instrument is a Warwick FNA Jazzman that produces a wonderfully warm tone without losing the punch required for more upbeat numbers. Amplification is provided by a Trace Elliot V Type valve head with 1X15 and 2X10 cabinets.
As Mike had played with Stuart in a previous band, it was easy to fit in with Inside Edge when the pair joined the band in 2001 resulting in a rhythm section that has never been stronger, allowing the vocals and guitars the freedom to create their own styles.
Although Mike has never considered himself a natural singer, he now forms an essential element of the harmonies that really set Inside Edge apart.
